The Hornady Lock-N-Load OAL Gauge (formerly Stoney Point) is an extremely easy to use tool. It only takes a couple of minutes to find the overall length for a particular bullet. The tool is threaded on one end to accept specially modified cartridge cases. Once threaded onto the tool, a bullet is inserted into the cartridge. The tool is then inserted into the chamber of your rifle. The push rod on the tool is used to push the bullet up against the rifling. The rod is then locked in place and the tool can be removed from the rifle. You then measure across the base of the cartridge and the top of the bullet with your dial calipers (use of a bullet comparator at this time is highly recommended) to obtain the OAL. If you want to check another type of bullet, insert the new bullet into the tool and repeat steps. There are two different models of OAL Gauge tools available. Straight is designed specifically for bolt-action rifles and single shot rifles. The Curved model is designed for autoloaders and lever actions. Both models utilize the same modified cases. Either tool will work on the AR-15 type rifles. This tool is excellent for periodically checking the throat erosion of a rifle barrel. Great for checking out used rifles. There are over 60 different modified cases available to use with this tool.
SPECS: Gauge- Machined aluminum, 12" (30cm) long, anodized finish, red. Straight Gauge for bolt and single shot actions. Curved Gauge for auto, pump, and lever actions.

Get the straight one instead(01/11/2017)
I bought this for an AR-15 and figured it would be the ideal for any future guns since the description says it'll work on autoloaders.
Unfortunately the design falls short. Thankfully Brownells has a great return policy and I got a straight one that works much better.
The "push rod" of the curved model is a tightly wound spring that is bigger than the trench cut in the oal gauge body so that the push rod protrudes past the machined relief that a caliper's jaw is meant to rest against. This prevents the caliper jaw from laying flat and pushes the round too far away from the bullet comparator set that you want to get with this tool for best measurements.
That bullet ogive comparator set is designed with the required offset for the straight OAL tool to line the case & bullet up perfectly with the comparator bullet hole but the additional forced offset of the curved tool means the case is not lined up square with the comparator bullet hole and instead presents the bullet a few degrees off of straight so that a precise measurement is impossible.
Bottom line: Get the straight version unless you have a rifle that will not allow it to work like a lever gun or just hate precise measurements.
I tried adding some photos but the server would not let me on this item for some reason even though I've done it elsewhere.
Great tool(04/01/2015)
Okay I got this tool some time ago, and did not think much of it until I did some reloading of new stuff. I got some new bullets that I don't normally use they are longer and much better brand. I set up the stuff and went to work. Put the finished round in the gun and stuck the bullet in the barrel. With this tool I got the new overall length and I'm back in business.
Fragile(07/08/2015)
Gauge works well, buy is very fragile. Do not drop it.
Works great(04/03/2016)
I purchased this to make my rounds more accurate without the guess work. I used to take a piece of brass, barely crimp the end to hold the bullet, and then use that, but it was very innacurate. This solved the issue. The gauge requires the specific pieces of brass (which you can make with a tap and die set...) and it takes out all the guess work. You insert the bullet into the case, slide it into the chamber, ram the rod all the way up so the bullets are hitting the lands, hold the case firm against the chamber and tighten gently. Pull the case back out, and get the same bullet (don't use a different one). I use the Hornady Comparator set which gives MUCH more accurate readings than doing an OAL. I start .005" back and work back from there. This works great because even when you use the same brand of bullet, they are still way different and it's nice to be able to do this as fast as possible (takes 2 minutes) and have match grade rounds coming out without the guess work. I have never had a quality issue, I have dropped mine, it has been sitting in a drawer with other tools, and it has never been an issue. Hornady stuff is great, and I will continue to purchase it.
Works great for precision reloading.(30/10/2017)
I use this to determine the distance to lands in an AR-15 for greater than magazine length loads using Sierra Match King 80gr bullets that are single loaded. It's a great way to enhance accuracy when done right.
The only headache is getting repeatable measurements on the distance to lands because of the shape of some leades (tapered start of rifling). Take your time, try different insertion methods and keep at it until you can get 10 consistent readings. At my best I'll get 10 readings with only .001" difference between them.
The photo below shows a 3 round group in the top right corner of the target I fired at 680 yards after the two in the center and one low left.
