Case Prep Made Super Easy!!!(08/03/2012)
I ordered the RCBS Trim Mate Case Prep center in my constant endevour to make my life easier when dealing with case preparation. Case prep is probably my least favorite things to do in the reloading process. I got tired of doing everything by hand and when I saw this unit, I just had to have it. So I ordered without hesitation and when it arrived I was super excited.
The unit isn't too overly big and isn't too small. It fits on my bench prefectly and has a nice long plug/cord. This is a plus as some people don't always have an outlet within hands reach. The unit has 5 rotating gear driven stations for any number of tools and has 2 stationary stations for things like brushes, etc.
One question that I have heard asked alot is if the unit will bog down when pressing down on the rotating stations. The answer is no. This unit comes with a good strong high torque motor that prevents you from having to work too hard to get the job at hand completed.
It has a neat little recess on the top of the unit that can be used as storage to hold all of your tools. It also comes with a small container of dry lube, which I have yet to use. However, I plan on testing it out eventually.
The until simply turns on by flipping the small black switch located directly on top of the unit. Once the unit is turned on, all you have to do is go through the individual stations for whatever it is that your doing. For me, I use the deburring tool and chamferer first. Once I have the case neck nice and smooth, I clean out the primer pocket with the brush (both small and large primer pocket brushes are included with the unit). After I have cleaned the primer pocket, I use the military crimp removal tool to get rid of that annoying crimp that makes priming a pain in the A. I then use the primer pocket uniforming tool to make the primer pocket nice and uniform, that way my primers seat nice and flat...all the time, everytime.
This is an example of the way I use mine. Any RCBS screw in type tool can be used on the unit and can be placed at any station of your choice. What about different sized brass? No problem. Swithcing from prepping small rifle to large rifle is a breeze and is done by simply un-screwing the tools and trading them out! EASY!
I am glad I ordered this unit as it has seriously made my life alot easier. Now I can spend less time on brass prep and more time focusing on my powder charge and seating my bullets correctly. I highly recommend to any reloader, especially if you feel the same way I do about case prep. Although the head do not spin fast, they do their job and and get it done right! A++++
Needs Improvement(23/06/2012)
The station itself is designed well and adequate for most quick case prep functions. The major flaw is the chamfering tool. The chamfering tool sucks out loud. RCBS needs to re-examine the current chamfering tool in comparison to the design of the hand chamfering tool, the Lyman or Hornady chamfering tool. I put my RCBS aside and bought a Lyman case prep station because of the poor, poor chamfering tool.
RCBS Trim Mate(17/01/2013)
I've had the unit for many years and it's used every time I prep any brass. As stated by an earlier reviewer it did have a couple of short comings.
The chamfer and deburring tools dulled quickly. I modified a Lee hand tool and installed it before buying carbide replacements. The new units hopefully ship with the carbide attachments.
The unit is one of the better investments I've made. If you do longer runs, are picky concerning case prep, and no longer have young fingers, this is a great tool.
Fan-freakin-tastic!(23/05/2014)
This thing is a champ! I wish I had bought one years ago. It makes brass prep a much speedier process. I can perform 5 functions now, in about the same amount of time it used to take me to do one by hand.
The extra fittings are a little spendy, so my initial investment was basically doubled by the cost of tooling (large and small military crimp removers, pocket uniformers and flash hole debur plus collets).
Buy once, cry once. It was worth it, and I look forward to many years of speeding up my brass prep.
Time saver(09/12/2014)
I picked up one of these localy on sale and with an RCBS rebate.
I had been re-sizing and then chamfering and deburring by hand.
It was tedious and time consuming.
This machine does a wonderful job in a hurry.
I had heard complaints that it was noisy but I dont find that to be a problem...yet.
I had looked at others but settled on RCBS.
Very satisfied...so far
Not quite what it could be.(12/05/2015)
This seems to be the standard tool of it's kind in my circle of friends. It does an adequate job of most of the tasks it is designed to do. But, with a couple of minor tweaks it could be a great tool, and not just an adequate tool. First, as others have mentioned, the tools turn too slowly. This affects the time spent on each case as well as the way it cuts. A slow cut speed on soft metal begs for chattering, and it certainly happens here. The extra few seconds on each piece adds up after a few hundred rounds. Second, the cutter for the outside of case necks flatly does not work. No matter what you do, or how long you do it, this cutter does nothing. You can get it to cut a little by leaning the case sideways and twirling it but the results are pretty dismal. The cutter angle of this tool is wrong for engaging the burr which is typically ringing the entire mouth of commercial rifle cases. I have tried my buddies machines too and I don't have a one-off weird one. They are all like this. I would try to use another brand before settling on this, to see if there is something better. I would buy it again, but only after carefully reviewing others.
Great Tool That Does The Job!(08/03/2012)
I ordered this tool to use in conjunction with my RCBS Trim Mate Case Prep Center. I can tell you that the tool definately does it's job and makes a nice even and smooth primer pocket. It simply screws into the unit (or RCBS primer pocket handle) and is used to uniform the primer pocket.
I did however, run into one issue with both the large and small primer pocket uniforming tools. It you press too hard when using this tool, you can remove too much material from the pocket, causing primers to seat way below flush. This will ultimately cause failure to fire when the primer is struck by some firearm firing pins.
To make sure this doesn't happen, all you have to do is make sure that you do not press too hard when using it. Other than that, this thing works great and helps with seating a good even flat primer. I recommend to anyone who wants to go above and beyond during the case prep phase. Get your self a set, you will love them!
Set screw is bad design(08/04/2016)
Be careful if you choose to use this tool. I purchased one to use on a Trim Mate. The spindle screw is long enough so that when it's threaded all the way in to the Trim Mate station, it will still contact the base of the (adjustable) cutter from the bottom. As the Trim Mate turns, the spindle threads deeper in to the tool and pushes the cutter till it slips past the set screw. Once I realized what was happening, I returned the tool to RCBS with a letter/diagram showing the problem. RCBS replaced the tool for free. The replacement they sent me has the spindle glued in to the tool, to prevent it from threading in any deeper. It was a cheap fix, but I'm OK with this. I began using it again and even with the spindle glued in place, the cutter blades have walked out of adjustment. This time I have no idea what is causing it. But the bottom line is that an adjustable pocket uniformer is pretty risky. The pocket specs aren't going to change. A fixed tool without an adjustment set screw is the way to go. Look at Redding or Sinclair for a very nice, carbide, non-adjustable tool. Redding tool will work on a Trim Mate. Sinclair will not. Good luck.
